Diamond Springs: gold country roots, small-town life
By Doug and Nicole Zeller · Zeller Real Estate
Diamond Springs is the kind of town that makes buyers say "this is the foothills I was hoping for." Unincorporated, unhurried, and rooted in nearly 180 years of Gold Country history, it sits at 1,791 feet in El Dorado County, with Placerville three miles away and Sacramento a manageable commute to the west. Here is a short guide to the place behind 4589 Volo Mine Dr.
A Gold Rush beginning
The town began in 1848 as a stopping point for travelers heading to the gold discovery at Coloma, about 11 miles up Highway 49. Early settlers named it for the clear, sparkling springs that fed the diggings, which produced a 25-pound gold nugget, one of the largest ever found in El Dorado County. By 1851 the town was in its most thriving period, supporting itself through mining, lumber, lime, and agriculture, and it once even vied for the county seat. Today the community is registered as California Historical Landmark #487.
Foothill life today
The drive to Placerville takes about five minutes, which means Old Town dining, groceries, and services are close without being on top of you. Sacramento is roughly 41 miles west, about 45 to 60 minutes by car, and many residents commute there or to El Dorado Hills and come home to oak trees and quiet streets.
Schools and day-to-day
Deer Park and the surrounding area feed into the Mother Lode Union Elementary School District for kindergarten through 8th grade, including Indian Creek Elementary and Herbert Green Middle School. High school is served by the El Dorado Union High School District, which is headquartered right here in Diamond Springs. School assignments can shift, so we always confirm current boundaries for a specific address before advising buyers.
